When Gadsby's opened In the late18th Century dogs were highly valuable companions. They were helpful in hunting, guarding and frequently were traded as a form of money. On April 26th a group of prized pups came to Old Town's Market Square to participate in the First Annual Gadsby's Tavern Dog Contest. ![]() The object of the contest was to choose a friendly canine representative for GTMS at the Hotel Monaco's Doggie Happy Hour, who would also march with us in the George Washington Birthday Parade, walk with us in the Scottish Walk and several other fun events. Read more about the day in the Gazette Packet's very nice story by Daisy Mae Del Ray, the new doggie columnist from the May 1st edition. ![]() Our judges, State Senator Patsy Ticer and Lance Mallamo, the Director of the Office of Historic Alexandria, had a daunting task to choose the best among this fine group of friendly canines. The Winner was Shantih, an Alaskan husky, with his person Charlie Martel ![]() Shantih wins the Gadsby Tavern Dog Tri-corner Hat! Our Runner-up was Gidget, a Bichon who came to the contest with Maureen Ribble and her three visiting grandchildren -- Kent Walker, Allison Ribble, & Gage Walker.
The Tavern Dog Contest is part of the campaign to support the upcoming renovations to Gadsby's Ice Well, a rare bit of urban archeology under the corner of Cameron and Royal streets.
