GTMS History

GTMS was formed in 1992 to provide on-going support of the preservation, development and interpretation of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in Old Town Alexandria.

Our support of the Museum has taken many forms, including:

  • Giving annual gifts which have become increasingly substantial:

    • reproduction period blanket and trivet

    • refrigerator for the Docent Lounge

    • shelving for the reception room

    • counter pane, window treatments and bed hangings for the East Bedchamber

  • Sponsoring Gadsby's participation in Alexandria events

    • selling refreshments for First Night Alexandria

    • hosting receptions for city activities such as Postmark Alexandria, George Washington Diversions, and a Neighborhood Open House

  • Advocating on behalf of Gadsby’s during Alexandria City budget debates

  • Providing financial support to Museum programs

    • Ceramic Exhibit

    • Pre-Visit Education Packages

    • Historic Hauntings

    • 1999 18th Century Fair

  • Promoting the Museum and its activities by

    • marching in 18th century attire in the George Washington's Birthday and St. Patrick’s Day parades

    • manning an information table at the Mount Vernon Avenue’s "Art on the Avenue" event

    • initiating a Speakers’ Bureau

  • Organizing fundraising campaigns to help purchase needed items for the museum

    • 1993, the Get Hooked on Gadsby’s campaign helped the Museum buy authentic 60 brass coat hooks for the ballroom

    • 1994-1998, a development campaign raised over $25,000 for new curtains for the ballroom.
