To take the Museum
out to the community Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society formed a Speakers
Bureau in 1998.
Our Speakers
Bureau can arrange for qualified speakers to make presentations to your
group or class on a variety of 18th century topics. Speakers
often dress in authentic 18th Century attire and may bring
props to illustrate their talks. This is a free service, but any donation
to the Society would be used to benefit the museum.
Topics
Obviously, tavern
life is one of our favorites. Tavern talks include both a general
overview of life in 18th C. Alexandria and a specific view of life in
Gadsby's Tavern including stories of the Tavern's most famous patron,
George Washington.
As part of the 2002 George Washington Symposium two Speakers Bureau
members, Colleen Woodward and Kathy Kelly, produced and directed
several mini-plays that highlighted the Symposium's topics.
Other GTMS
speakers cover topics such as
-
women and work
in the 17th and 18th centuries
-
the roles of
women and African-Americans at the Tavern
-
18th
century cuisine (sometimes serving actual examples)
-
and many more: early government, gardens, folklore, medicine, shopping and
entertainment.
Each talk includes a brief historical background of Gadsby’s Tavern
Museum.
